SkinBase was started in 2005 by Brother and Sister Richard and Leesa Faulkner. At the time, Richard was busy running a successful storage company (and still is!). Leesa had her high street salon. With business in their blood (their parents are also business owners), these two were always destined to do something a little different!
SkinBase Microdermabrasion
The idea for SkinBase came because of Leesa’s problems with the microdermabrasion machine she owned at the time. A great money maker but plagued by issues and losing her valuable time and profits. Leesa’s father, a qualified engineer, stepped in. Convinced he could make something better and more reliable, he set about doing just that.
SkinBase was formed.
Richard’s natural salesmanship, drive and positive attitude coupled with Leesa’s calm and confident manner as a trainer was a recipe for success. The company flourished. The SkinBase HQ was Richard’s home office, where he rang salon leads to offer the two-week free trial. Meanwhile Leesa was out on the road training up and down the country.
2008 Recession
However, it wasn’t without its setbacks, as in 2008 the double-dip recession hit. But, as ever, Richard looked for a way to put a positive spin on a difficult situation, and our first PAYG machines hit the market. For a £0 deposit and £0 investment, a free two-week trial and training, salons could ride the recession and come out on top. And they did! Richard proved beauty treatments are not something clients want to just give up, even in a recession! And that is how SkinBase started.
SkinBase Pay As You Go
PAYG is now by far the most popular choice amongst salon owners, with therapists choosing to rent machines in return for SkinBase’s award-winning customer support. Hassle-free, no ongoing servicing and consumable costs, no hidden charges. The microdermabrasion machine was our first step into salon equipment (but not our last!), and you can find out more in the next blog in our series.
